Road to the Two Holy Mosques (Holy Haramain VR)
A VR, AR and AI experience for visiting the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque and learning their history.
- Year
- 2023
- Field
- Simulation and virtual worlds
A comprehensive 3D simulation of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque that users explore with a VR headset, accompanied by an AI avatar that explains landmarks and the history of the expansions. It aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goal of using technology to improve the visitor experience.
Components
- Virtual tours inside the Two Holy Mosques, including places that cannot be visited in reality
- "We sent you only as a mercy to the worlds": a documentary simulation of the Prophet's life, without depicting persons
- "The Holy Kaaba: the Frequented House", on the Kaaba's history through the ages
- A mobile and PC app with augmented reality: interactive map, rites simulation, the Hijra route, and a multilingual jurisprudence assistant
- Learning experiences designed for children
The virtual simulation also extends to Al-Aqsa Mosque. Prototypes of the Medina and Kaaba simulations were shown at a cultural salon at the 2024 Cairo International Book Fair.
Religious review
The project was presented at Egypt's Ministry of Awqaf in the presence of the Minister, and Prof. Abdullah El-Naggar, a member of Al-Azhar's Islamic Research Academy, gave his religious opinion on the project in a recorded video.
The jurisprudence assistant is designed to draw its answers from recognised religious sources. It is a tool for learning and orientation and does not replace consulting qualified scholars.
